Oak Creek Canyon engagement photos
When people think of photos in Sedona, green trees and rivers aren’t always their first thought.
However, Oak Creek Canyon is another example of why northern Arizona is great for destination weddings, elopements or engagements. Just a mile north from the heart of Sedona, this area offers a beautiful vibe shift that shocks most visitors. Some fun facts:
- The Federal Government designated Oak Creek a “Unique Waterway.”
- It’s one of the last free-running streams in Arizona, sourced from an underground spring.
- The Forest Service recognizes the beauty of this area by designating this drive as a Scenic Drive.
The underrated area involves 10 miles of the nearby State Route 89A that twists and turns through a tight two-lane road. But just over the 89A’s highway barrier rests the Oak Creek river and the trees, animals, and greenery the water supports.
When should engagement photos be taken?
Kayla and Matt are special case, because they postponed their wedding due to the pandemic.
I normally recommend couples take their engagement photos at least a year to six months before the wedding date. This gives you the time to post your pictures together on your social, add the pictures to your save the date and RSVP, and add to your website.
But of course, sometimes couples get their engagement photos taken without a wedding date set. That’s no problem. Just make sure your dream photographer can fit your schedule!
Why engagement photos are so important
This session in the canyon at Cave Springs Campground had Kayla and Matt laughing and playing as they posed for our photographer to take their engagement photos.
But not every couple takes the time to schedule an engagement shoot. I always recommend couples get their engagement photos taken by the photographer who will shoot their wedding, because it gives the couple an opportunity to be comfortable with the photographer. Comfort leads to the best photos, so I was always value my couples’ comfort above almost everything else.

How accessible was this area and how accessible is the path into the canyon area?
Hello Danet. It’s a bit of a mix. Oak Creek Canyon has the 89A road running through the center of it, which provides for some quick, albeit dangerous access. It’s best to travel there with someone who knows the safest way to travel!
